When CPS is mentioned in any conversation the listener assumes that it means Criminal Prosecution Services (The Prosecution in Law Courts), until they see the blank look on my face which indicates that they are mistaken by their assumption. With no other reference in mind they ask with such an embarrassed chuckle what it is that I do, that I cannot help a deep sigh before letting them into the know that CPS is that of Close Protection Services – which also leaves them scratching their heads in confusion in some cases – to which I continue. Close Protection Services is “Bodyguard” work, or better known as “The Bullet Catcher” in some professions.
There are CPS Officers out there who have shared many stories while on their travels throughout the world, though these stories have sometimes been embellished of the real truth but still they are stories all the same. As many people know all too well, the Service which Close Protection offers its clients is nothing to go around bragging about, especially if that client wants their privacy protecting also during the assignment. Those that fail to adhere to this can find themselves being arrested and charged with anything from Endangerment to Treason, where both carry a custodial sentence of no less than seven years.
The emphasis on Close Protection Service Officers is that they must be willing to ‘Protect’ the client, whatever the cost to the assigned Officer. In many cases the clash with a rogue stalker or criminal who wishes to cause harm to the client does get a little hairy, but with the appropriate training for dealing with this, the confrontation becomes a scuffle, then a quick arrest. And only twice have I had to be subject to this procedure.
Of course, when my daughters were born, it was considered that the exposure and risk to them would lead me to Low Profile Clients, while I could spend more time with my family. It was not a decision taken lightly, as the adrenalin rush for more assignments were quickly accepted and then reassigned to another associate for reasons that the whole Low Profile order had been invoked. It was now that the whole CPS and Bodyguard business lost one of its dedicated sons.
Six years on and I hear the calling, I see the action staring me directly in the face when I switch on Crime Watch UK. The painful reminder stares me straight in the face every time I visit the shopping Centre for errands, as does the attitudes of some people when I see them staring at me from the street corner in an attempt to wind me up and give chase. Then I have the soft warm hand of one of my young daughters grab hold of me and break the silence with their questions in general. The next thing I know is I’m home sitting down with them in front of the TV, sometimes having my hair reshaped and covered with bows and pigtails…oh the pains I go through to bring a smile to their faces. But hey, being a parent to children is considered one of the biggest assignments in my line of work and it is an assignment that I will never become tired of.
